Bus Reno – 4
In 2014 we bought a bus, renovated it and then lived in it for nearly 3 years. I have re-created this Bus Reno series from a previous website I closed.
Part of the plan for our bus living is to become as environmentally friendly and self sufficient as possible. There are some great innovations out there in RV land to help with this.
Having a convenient place to pee is most important. Especially as you get older. I wasn’t going to entertain the idea of living in a bus unless we could have an on-board loo!
To my absolute joy the bus came with an uninstalled Airhead so all was well in my world.
Flushing toilets in RV’s are achievable but it involves holding tanks and the necessity of emptying them etc. Not my idea of fun, but a composting toilet appealed to my ‘help save the world’ persona.
What is a composting toilet? Well I think they are a really smart Idea. More houses should be using them. Instead we flush half our precious water supply down the pipes each day. Sheer lunacy.
Reducing your impact on the environment is A Better Way To Go
As a civilization we are so distanced from the yucky things. Compost is nature doing its thing. Turning nasty to good so it can be re-used to create something else.
Our planet is in trouble. I believe that learning to live sustainably is essential if we hope to maintain a civilization in the future. Our western way of life has promoted wastefulness. The more we buy the larger our refuse pits become.
Clean potable water has become a valuable commodity that is being bought up by big corporations where ever they can get away with it. Fracking and other BIG operations are polluting waterways and primary water basins. And we just keep flushing it down the pipes.
There has to be a better way.
Enough with the soap box
When we bought the bus the toilet cubicle was located at the front of the bus just behind the driver. That didn’t appeal so we moved it toward the back. The long term plan is to put a shower cubicle opposite it where the draws are now.
The ventilation hose was attached to the roof and we bought a Solar extractor fan to top the hose. Works pretty well too. Haven’t had any nasty smells hanging around the area.
So now we only flush once every 2-3 days which makes me happy.
